***The hotel will close on the 15th December 2007 in order to carry out a year long refurbishment programme. They will work on a multi million pound programme that will include all areas of the hotel and hope to reopen early in 2009.***
Opened in 1889, the Savoy Hotel is such a grand property that it is even approached via its own road, Savoy Street, which runs off the Strand (and is the only road in London where vehicles drive on the right.) It is housed in an opulent building with a sandstone façade and an imposing entrance flanked by green liveried doormen. Artists, celebrities, politicians and potentates have stayed here over the years, including Monet, who produced over 70 canvasses of its celebrated river views. The spacious lobby is sumptuously appointed with elegant marbles and dark wood. A generous, comfortable seating area is situated in front of the large reception desk and an elegant staircase leads on to the Thames Foyer, where guests can enjoy a light meals and traditional English Afternoon Tea. The 263 guestrooms are appointed in a traditional style, enhanced by Art Deco touches. They feature solid, comfortable furniture, large wardrobes, and an eclectic blend of antiques, such as gilt mirrors, Queen Anne chairs and Victorian sofas. They are also equipped with the needs of the business traveller in mind, offering dual voltage outlets to support European and North American power cords. All the rooms are immaculately maintained, as are the en suite marble bathrooms, with rainfall showers. The hotel offers a variety of dining options. Recently refurbished, the celebrated, Michelin-starred “Savoy Grill” features banquettes dressed in bold neutral stripes, a gold leaf ceiling and rich wood panelling, which has been restored to its original cognac shades. Under the guiding hand of Marcus Wareing, one of Britain’s premier chefs, the new menu reflects modern European in all its glory. For more informal dining, “Banquette”, the new upstairs restaurant above the Grill, is styled to resemble an American diner. Its design evokes the interior of a 1950's Corvette Stingray with a palette of tomato red, ivory and brown, with stainless steel and streamlined, cream leather banquettes that stretch the entire length of the dining area. The American Bar first opened in the late 1890's and has been a stylish meeting place for hotel guests and Londoners ever since, with a Jazz pianist performing every evening. Alternatively, Laurent-Perrier Champagne Bar enables guests to enjoy a selection of Laurent-Perrier's most famous vintages in a stylish environment decorated in taupe, silver blue and black tones. The bar itself, wrapped in black and ashen taupe leather, is evocative of the hotel’s Art Deco heritage.
